Bitcoin Faces Urgent Quantum Threat, Says Solana Founder

Solana’s co-founder, Anatoly Yakovenko, has raised a serious warning for the Bitcoin community: it’s time to prepare for the future threat of quantum computing. Speaking at the All-In Summit 2025, Yakovenko said there’s a real possibility—about a 50/50 chance—that a major quantum breakthrough could happen within the next five years.

He pointed out how fast new technologies, like artificial intelligence, are going from research labs to real-world use. Quantum computing could follow the same path, and if it does, it could pose a major risk to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Yakovenko’s key suggestion? Bitcoin should switch to a “quantum-resistant signature scheme.” In simple terms, that means updating Bitcoin’s security systems so they can’t be cracked by powerful quantum computers in the future.

**Why Is Quantum Computing a Threat to Crypto?**

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin rely on cryptography to secure transactions. This ensures no one can tamper with or spy on your digital money transfers. But the fear is that future quantum computers could break this encryption in seconds, making crypto wallets and transactions vulnerable to attacks.

This concern isn’t new. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has also spoken publicly about the dangers quantum computing might bring to blockchain and crypto systems. Both leaders are urging the crypto world to take action now, before it’s too late.

**Not Everyone Agrees**

Despite these warnings, not all experts believe the threat is urgent. Ian Miers, a computer science professor at the University of Maryland, thinks worries about quantum attacks are overblown. He believes claims about quantum computing’s progress are often driven by companies looking for funding and attention. According to Miers, we’re likely still 50 years away from having quantum computers that can actually break today’s cryptography.

**What’s Next for Crypto Security?**

As the tech world continues to move fast, the debate around quantum computing and crypto security is heating up. While some believe there’s still time, others like Yakovenko say action must be taken now. The key message: Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies need to start planning for a quantum-resistant future to stay secure in the long run.
